The Media Innovation Lab is pleased to announce the appointment of Jon Zmikly as Assistant Director. Zmikly has taught in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication since 2009 and is an alumni of the School’s graduate program. He has been active in introducing innovation efforts to the program, including leading the virtual reality/360 video emphasis, supervising SJMC’s digital presence and assisting with the SXTXState project and the PhDigital Bootcamp. He has also led immersive workshops throughout the university, partnering with entities such as the Division of Information Technology and the Department of Computer Information Systems.

In his capacity as Assistant Director, Zmikly will continue these efforts in a more directed and specific capacity, including increased collaborations across the university and with outside constituents on innovation activities, mentoring faculty on digital training and leading students in support of SJMC and MILab projects.

“Jon has been integral to the success of our innovation efforts for more than a decade,” Cindy Royal, MILab Director said. “His appointment as assistant director best reflects his role in the organization and will allow us to more aggressively move toward our goals in supporting innovation across curriculum, scholarship, faculty development, community networking and events.”

“I am honored and excited to be working with the MILab in this new role,” said Zmikly. “The appointment both validates the work I have already been doing within our department and will provide new opportunities for growth and innovation throughout our university.”

In addition to his academic activities, Zmikly is co-founder of Coiski, a full-service digital agency based in Austin.
